"Notes & Quhttp://www.goodson.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/BGPost.jpgotes" from Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang Funny Car, after Friday's qualifying sessions in Charlotte.
WILK 4th ON TWO SOLID PASSES
Tim Wilkerson wasn't the quickest Funny Car driver on the property, but he was the fastest. He didn't earn any bonus points, but he just missed one and outran some big hitters. And, he ended the first day of qualifying in Charlotte in the No. 4 spot on the strength of his Q2 4.003 at 318.32 mph. In Q1, run in less desirable conditions, he went end-to-end at 4.091 seconds.
"That was okay, and we'll take it," Wilk said, after his Q2 lap. "I was trying to run just a tick quicker, but it's hard to complain about a 4.003, and for once we came out on the good side of the thousandth. We saw Force run a 4.004 right in front of us, and we went up there with the mindset to get a little more aggressive. This time, we outran him by a thou. Seems like all year we've been in a group of cars all running great, within a few thousandths of each other, and we're the slowest one.
"Tomorrow should be hot and that will make it a lot slower, so I had the mentality that we needed to get back to getting after it a little more, and I'm satisfied that we did that. I felt like we were playing it too safe in Indy, and now that we're in the Countdown there's really nothing to lose. We can only run what the track will hold, so tomorrow it's just a comparison versus everyone else, but tonight we had a chance to go fast and we did."
