"Notes & Quotes" from Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang Funny Car, after Saturday's qualifying sessions in Pomona.
UP AND DOWN DAY FOR WILK
Tim Wilkerson seemed to have exorcised his clutch demons in Q1 here, despite admitting that he's at least in partial "test mode" here in preparation for next season. He posted a strong 4.023 to be 5th after one, but then smoked the tires hard right near the same spot that plaques him in Dallas and Las Vegas. He is 9th overnight.
"We're making some big changes to the clutch department, and that was a really nice get-it-down-the-track run in Q1," Wilk said. "There was more out there, but we've been smoking the tires a lot lately and I wanted to get a number on the board no matter what. So, happy with that one.
"In Q2, under much better conditions, we just smoked the heck out of the tires approaching about 500 feet, and it really surprised me how fast it did that. When it does that, and that is the issue we've had here lately, it's not a tuning problem, it's a clutch problem and we have to figure out how to go fast but get past that point. That's what we're studying now, and we'll keep studying it and testing things."
