Wake Up Your Diesel : Building Diesel Horsepower

We know that increased flow creates increased power. That is the principle behind the Black Smoke Series of seat cutters that were developed for Goodson by Joe Mondello Racing Engines.

Unlike most valve seat cutters, these cutters are for specific applications:

  • 7.3L Powerstroke Ford
  • 6.0L Powerstroke Ford
  • 12 Valve, 5.9L Cummins
  • 6.6L Duramax

Now to take it one step further to maximize your power and torque, after machining your seats with the Black Smoke Series Cutters, relieve the valve pockets using the Goodson Diesel Relief Tooling.

The Diesel Relief Tooling consists of a mounting bar and indexing pin along with an offset pilot. The offset pilot will index in the mounting fixture so that the guide is offset away from the cylinder wall. Set the radius cutter that comes with the tooling set (BSS-45CC or BSS-20CC) so that is will not cut past the fire line of the gasket. Machine to the depth so that the cut blends with the top angle of the seat. More material will be removed from the center of the seat than from the outer edge. This offset cut will increase the low lift flow. Tests have shown up to 20% gain on the flow bench.
