Buyer Beware

We get a lot of calls from guys who’ve gotten a “great deal” on ebay on a seat and guide machine, valve refacer, you name it. Their only problem is they need a replacement part for the machine to make it useable.

Well, ya know what? A lot of the machines you’ll see out on ebay are there for a reason. In a lot of cases it’s because the manufacturer has gone out of business and replacement parts are no longer available.

Don’t get us wrong. There are some great deals out there but you need to be sure you have ALL of the information before you agree to buy the machine you’re looking at. There are a couple of reasons to use honing oil. First, the honing oil keeps the abrasive open. An ample, steady stream of honing oil is also necessary to flush away the swarf (used abrasive grit and cylinder material). Now that you’ve chosen your seat stone, dressing is your next step. The diamond is your friend, but only if it has a sharp point. The diamond’s job when dressing a stone is to remove enough material to expose fresh abrasive. Sizing up the valve guide

The valve guide is designed to support the valve during operation as well as transfer heat for cooling. Okay, we all know that part and when the guides become worn they will increase oil consumption and lose the ability to transfer heat and that’s when we need to replace and resize the valve guide. Worn guides will draw oil down the valve stem and will coat or coke on the port side of the valve. This will hinder air flow and cause engine performance to be compromised. Too much oil getting down that valve stem and we can experience mechanical failure due to the increased possibility of pre-ignition.
